Recipe:
New HP Server
Windows 2003 Server
Result and syntoms:
Incredibly slow server, like a 486SX
SQL Server doesn’t work, query timeout with small data set
Network Services, continuos timeouts
Useless attempts to fix:
Call HP support (lol)
Reinstall Windows XP Professional (with all service pack)
Reinstall Windows 2003 Server (with all service pack)
Mess around with sata configuration in BIOS
Solution (this count as a very great beer):
Enable hard disk write cache!
This screen shot is taken from WinXP to show where activate cache; in Windows 2003 Server you have also another level of write cache for higher performance.
But my question is: Who have disable this?
Damn! Yesterday another HP server with same syntomps and cache disabled, but it seems that it’s a windows update that disable this.. bah…
I think other people really needs this information.
